Innovation of the day, by Anicet Mbida , June 17, 2020

“To compensate for the loss of turnover, restaurateurs have been authorized to set up on the sidewalk and even on the road. However, they do not always have suitable furniture. Thanks to a kit system, they will be able to divert stakes from public spaces to make tables.

This Wednesday morning, a great idea that could interest restaurants and bars. This is a kit that transforms anti-parking posts on the sidewalks into mini tables (standing tables).

It's very clever, you had to think about it. We slide a sort of large wooden hat onto the post, screw it in and we end up with a small, perfectly stable bistro table.

To compensate for the loss of turnover, restaurateurs were authorized to set up on the sidewalk and even on the road. Problem: they don't always have suitable furniture. With this system, they will be able to divert the pickets from public spaces. It's very quick to assemble and disassemble. And since they are all spaced a little more than a meter apart, we naturally respect the distance.

It was Félix Miquel, a 20-year-old Parisian, in his second year of architecture, who launched this concept. I love his name: he called it “Extra Terrasse”.

Who makes these kits, does he have a company?

No, he makes everything himself, on his balcony, with recycled wood. There are already several restaurants in his neighborhood that use them.

The concept is not limited to tables. It also offers ashtrays to install in front of bars in busy neighborhoods. This will avoid seeing cigarette butts everywhere. He also manufactures flower pots for decoration shops and florists. It will be prettier than putting them on the ground. And even hydroalcoholic gel dispensers to offer in front of a store or school. You just have to put it on a post.

It is therefore a new way of reclaiming urban space. And to make these ugly stakes a little more useful. I don’t know if you know this, but in Paris, there are more than 300,000!”
