The guide to setting up your balcony: 5 steps

The difference between a functional balcony and a disappointing one often comes down to the order in which decisions are made. This guide follows 6 steps in the right sequence.

A well-appointed balcony doesn't just happen by accident. It is the result of a few good decisions made in the right order. This guide details them one by one, from the first measurement to the final touch.

Step 1: Evaluate your space above all else

Three measurements to note before starting: the depth, the total width, and the usable width once the door is fully open. The latter determines what size furniture can fit and be moved around without obstruction. You should also note the orientation: a south-facing balcony will be hot and bright, while a north-facing one will be cool all year round. East and west offer partial sunlight depending on the time of day.

Step 2: Choose a primary use

Before buying anything, one decision must be made: what will this balcony be used for primarily? A dining area, a reading nook, an urban garden, or a morning coffee spot: each use creates very different needs. On a compact balcony, it is better to choose just one and stick to it. A clear purpose makes for a coherent layout.

Step 3: Select the furniture

Only one criterion really matters: can this furniture stay outside all year round without deteriorating? For small spaces, furniture that leaves the floor clear is always the best choice. The Balconie by Extra Terrasse perfectly embodies this logic: it attaches to the railing, is made of powder-coated steel, and is resistant to frost and UV rays. It therefore leaves the balcony floor completely free! Available in eight colors in the large size (sage green, gentian blue, ochre, anthracite gray, ruby red, garnet red, Parisian green, and steel blue) and in four colors in the small size, to suit all styles.

Step 4: Add plants without cluttering

The classic mistake: trying to grow too many things on the floor of an already limited space. The right approach: use the railing and walls as the main planting surfaces. The Balconnières by Extra Terrasse hook onto the top bar of the railing without needing to drill or screw anything. Available in two sizes and six colors coordinated with the Balconie, they allow you to add greenery along the entire length of the railing without sacrificing any floor space.

Step 5: Create the ambiance with finishes

This is the last step, not the first. Lighting (string lights, tea light holders), textiles (cushions, throws), and small decorative details complete the setup once the foundation is in place. For lighting: warm and low. For textiles: one main color and materials treated for outdoor use.

In summary

Five steps, in this order. Evaluate, decide, furnish, add greenery, and finish. Each one influences the next. If done in the reverse order, you end up with a balcony full of items that don't go together and that you no longer use.
