"To compensate for the loss of revenue, restaurateurs were authorized to set up on the sidewalk and even on the roadway. Yet, they do not always have suitable furniture. Thanks to a kit system, they will be able to repurpose public space bollards to make tables."

This Wednesday morning, a great idea that could interest restaurants and bars. It is a kit that transforms the no-parking bollards found on sidewalks into mini tables (high tables).

It is very clever; it was a long time coming. You slide a kind of large wooden top over the bollard, screw it on, and you end up with a perfectly stable little bistro table.

To compensate for the loss of revenue, restaurateurs were authorized to set up on the sidewalk and even on the roadway. Problem: they do not always have suitable furniture. With this system, they will be able to repurpose public space bollards. It is very quick to assemble and disassemble. And since they are all spaced a little more than a meter apart, social distancing is naturally respected.

It was Félix Miquel, a 20-year-old Parisian in his second year of architecture school, who came up with this concept. I love the name: he called it "Extra Terrasse".

Who makes these kits? Does he have a company?

No, he makes everything himself, on his balcony, with reclaimed wood. Several restaurants in his neighborhood are already using them.

The concept is not limited to tables, either. He also offers ashtrays to install in front of bars in busy neighborhoods. This will prevent cigarette butts from being seen everywhere. He also makes flower pots for home decor stores and florists. It will look nicer than leaving them on the ground. And even hand sanitizer dispensers to offer in front of a store or school. You just have to slip them over a bollard.

It is therefore a new way to reclaim urban space. And to make these ugly bollards a little more useful. I don't know if you know this, but in Paris, there are more than 300,000 of them!"
